DESCRIPTION AND BACKGROUND: “Massey’s Pride” was grown by the Massey family at their Texas homestead for many decades. This is a gowenii type hybrid, C. bulbispermum x C. zeylanicum. We have recorded up to 13 buds on 27″ scapes, but think the bud count and height will increase somewhat, probably to about 3′, as the bulb matures and gets more established. The largest bulb is absolutely huge, about 8″ in diameter. Flowers are almost a pure white with a very light pink stripe that fades from the flower tip towards the center of the flower. They open wide and have beautifully recurving flower tips that curl back about 360 degrees. The bulb is seed sterile. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids, and there is nothing very similar to a gowenii type bulb, so it is a must for any serious collector. GROWING CONDITIONS: Crinum will grow in ordinary garden soil and and can take the full sun or will still bloom in some shade. Here in northeast FL, zone 9, they flower in late May until September. This can easily be a container plant in colder climates, and I would recommend heavy mulching in zone 6 and 7, and winter protection in colder zones. Because it has bulbispermum as a parent, it is quite cold hardy, requires no special care, and can tolerate extended dry periods. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a medium-size bulb about 1 1/2″ in diameter. It is at least 2 years old and should bloom within 2 years. Crinum do not like being disturbed, so it could take one year to “settle in.” Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb – should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb – should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb – should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb – started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
