Welcome to Pioneer Fossils! A Certificate of Authenticity, which has a color photo on it of the exact item you purchased, will accompany the specimen. Plus a free display stand. Here is a beautiful, museum-worthy fossil plate featuring 2 new (as yet unnamed) species of Starfish. We contacted a number of experts on ancient marine life, and this was their conclusion. Starfish are star-shaped (five or more feet) echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea. The plate is from the Ordovician, from about 443 to 485 million years ago. Found near Erfoud, Morocco in 2024. The starfish are both in-Situ, or in their original resting place, not transplanted or inlaid. The plate measures about 9 inches (228.6 mm.) at the longest distance. The whole piece weighs about 2 lbs. 7.1 oz. (1107 grams). We start with the long, lean starfish. It is not a brittle star, as the legs meet each other in the center, rather than a central disc. We previously had a larger example of this starfish (since sold), but those are the only examples of this species that we have seen. From tip to tip it measures just under 4 inches. Just underneath that starfish is another unnamed starfish, with a membrane between the 5 podia (feet) that forms a concave shape between the feet. We believe we have seen only one other example of this. Not the same species as the starfish with a straighter membrane connecting the podia. Tip to tip is about 3.5 inches. Even when more of these species of starfish are found and they are named, this specimen will still be a wonderful, detailed extreme rarity, and part of a superior collection. According to Deep Sea World of Scotland, “Starfish are characterised by their thick, triangular shaped arms which are at their widest where they connect to the central body…Brittle stars, on the other hand, have much thinner arms that connect to a distinct central disc.” The details on both creatures is all natural and superb.
