eBay About Astrophytum caput-medusae Am I selling one on its own roots? For real? Yep, for real. If you’ve been growing cacti for a while, you know about this one. It is, insanely enough, placed in the genus Astrophytum, even though it really doesn’t look like one. Oh, the seeds, flowers, and epidermis seem consistent with Astrophytum, but otherwise….look at it!!??!! I was pretty much resigned to put it in its own genus (Digitostigma), but recent genetics work has analyzed the DNA of this plant and concluded that, yep, it really belongs in the genus Astrophytum. OK…. Anyway, I’ve been growing this plant for some years, experimenting with ways to try to propagate it, and unfortunately I’ve just not found any easy way to do it. It is quite picky about soils, and rots out really easily. My best results have been by growing them in a mostly pure pumice/granite mix, which is what I grow my breeder plants in. Small plants like more organic material. I’ve got many seedlings, but I just don’t want to put them on eBay until they are large enough. Unfortunately, by the time the plants get big enough, I’ve invariably become so attached to them, that I couldn’t list them on eBay. But I’m biting the bullet, and putting these on the market. I don’t like to graft plants just to speed them up a little bit, so these plants have been growing on their own root systems since day 1. If you dig the plant out of the ground to look at it, you’ll see a little radish-like stem, and the most lame root system you can imagine. It’s like this plant just wants to have a difficult life! This sale’s specifics Allow me to be very clear here, especially for the crowd that doesn’t like to read…. the price of this sale will get you a SINGLE plant. Each 2″ pot has a single plant with nice long tubercles, although the oldest may shrivel before you buy it. The longest tubercles are several cm long. Some of the plants have already produced their first flowers. Any flowering plants I automatically pollinate, but they may not produce seed. I’ll ship these plants off, largest to smallest, as if I were buying the plants myself. I can’t promise you’ll get a plant that has flowered, or that has seed on it. In fact, if these plants don’t sell for months, and the seed mature, I’ll keep them for myself! (Wouldn’t you?) Know, however, that each of these plants are large enough to produce their first flowers, if they haven’t already. This is a pretty pricey plant, but that’s because it represents several years of very careful work on my part! You usually just can’t buy this plant on its own roots, this large, anywhere. Maybe etsy? But holy cow, the prices I’ve seen there. Grafted plants are waaaay cheaper, and may be a wise option if you don’t mind the Frankenstein monster look of a grafted plant. So…if you’re a desperate nutter for this plant, I honor you, as I am as well. And I’ve got this plant for you. I’ll also include a few photos of my breeding plants, just because I’m proud. General cultivation These plants are challenging for many to grow. Rot appears to be the biggest cause of mortality. I have minimized this by growing my plants in very well draining medium. Seedlings have a lot of organic material, but I shift them to more inorganic media as the plants get bigger. Since I do that, I must fertilize lightly with each watering. Even so, these plants take a long time to grow because the bottom of the root tuber seems to shrivel away. The key is growing it correctly, so the plant bulks up the root faster than it shrinks! I grow this plant in light (30%) shade–they might burn if you grow them in full sun and aren’t careful. If you grow them in heavy shade they don’t do well. I let the plants get well over 110 F (43 C) during the summer, so they can take a lot of heat! Buying and shipping The plant will be shipped in the pot. Please ensure that your shipping address will not expose the boxed plant to extreme conditions. Mailboxes in full sun can become dangerously hot, and I will ship to cold climates at your risk. If you want me to include a heat pack, you must contact me immediately upon paying for the plants as I sometime box/ship plants within an hour of payment being received. I’m happy to accommodate your special requests, although there might be increased shipping charges I have to invoice you for–that’s the post office’s doings, not mine! If you want a separate soil baggie, check my listings. If you purchase multiple items from me, I will combine shipping charges, but it is a good idea to send me a note so I catch the fact that you have multiple orders from me. (The same holds if you’re involved in more than one auction.) As long as you notify me, I will wait until your shopping is complete before shipping. The fastest way to proceed is to pay for all your items, and then when I box everything up I will calculate the new shipping charges, and refund you the difference via PayPal. If there are problems with the plants when the box arrives, please discuss it with me so I can make things right with you (instead of giving my eBay account a bad review). Other comments Plants in my cultivation are treated with systemic insecticides once or twice per year, but only as needed. As such, this specimen should be considered reasonably pest-free. Note, however, that I grow it outdoors with a minimum of pesticides, and suitable pest precautions should be taken in incorporating them into your collection or landscape. The plant is adapted to bright sun in central California. However, shade it lightly for a few weeks after receiving it. I do not buy plants to quickly turn them around and resell them. I know all the plants I sell—most have resulted from normal propagation of my collection plants. If you have questions about growing them, please do not hesitate to ask.
